Summary of Fishing Report from "Coastal Fisherman" (Vol 48 | Num 10 | Jul 5, 2023)This summary is based on an article by Capt. BJ Pietryak published in the Coastal Fisherman Newspaper. Ocean City Offshore Charter BoatsOcean City, Maryland saw a significant increase in visitors as the summer season began. With more boats on the water, fishing pressure has risen. However, the fishing has been excellent for this early in the season. Anglers have been successful by finding less crowded spots to catch keeper fish. Both nearshore wrecks and reefs and the back bays have yielded fruitful results. Nearshore Wrecks & ReefsThe nearshore wrecks and reefs have become popular locations for flounder fishing, with most anglers reaching their catch limits easily. Flounder can be found on the down current side of wrecks and other bottom structures such as rocks and shells. The "Angler" headboat has reported a satisfying mix of sea bass and flounder on their trips. The "Ocean Princess" experienced productive days of sea bass fishing, taking advantage of calm weather conditions. Flounder fishing has also improved, with one angler catching an impressive 12 flounder on a single trip, although only one was a keeper. Other notable catches in the area include cutlass fish, red hake, and triggerfish. "Bad Wind Charters" had successful trips targeting bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and flatfish. The Fenwick Shoals and the area near the first lump have been particularly productive for Spanish mackerel. Trolling small Clark spoons and using jigs near feeding schools has proven effective, with smaller spoons increasing the chances of a bite. Small bluefish have also been present but can be a nuisance when targeting Spanish mackerel. "Fish Bound" charters have had excellent fluke fishing, consistently bringing home fish limits for their anglers. Spanish mackerel, bonita, and bluefish have also been caught during their trips. The weather is expected to calm down, providing favorable conditions for both anglers and captains. Fishing at Great Gull or Little Gull is recommended, as cobia are expected to start appearing soon. An exciting occurrence took place when a young angler caught a nice-sized cobia in the back bays while fishing on the headboat "Tortuga". The area has also witnessed impressive catches of flounder weighing over 5 pounds, providing exciting battles for anglers. "Flip N Fins" had a successful trip, catching sheepshead, triggerfish, and various other keepers. Back Bays of OCThe back bays of Ocean City have been thriving with regular catches of large flounder. The "Tortuga" had a memorable trip, bringing home trophy-sized flatfish and creating enjoyable experiences for all aboard. Visitors can also spot wild ponies from Assateague Island, adding a wildlife element to the fishing adventure. The "OC Bay Hopper" offers crabbing trips in the back bays, allowing visitors to learn the art of crabbing from Captain Dave. Anglers in the Thorofare area, such as Ken Bechtel and his wife Molly, have successfully caught three keeper flounder measuring 17.5, 16.5, and 16 inches This summary is based on an article by Capt. BJ Pietryak published in the Coastal Fisherman Newspaper.

Trophy Stripers, Move Over! While trophy stripers may steal the headlines every April, it's also the time when flounder begin their spring invasion. If you're looking for a change of pace, head to the shore and get ready for some hot flatfish action! Meet the FlounderFor many anglers, their spring ritual involves chasing a fish that has both eyes on the same side of its body. Flounder, with their unique anatomy and camouflage abilities, lie partially buried on sandy bottoms before ambushing their prey. Did you know that flounder undergo a fascinating metamorphosis, with their right eye migrating to the left side of their head as they grow? It's a fish full of surprises! Delmarva Bays and InletsThe Delmarva Peninsula, separating the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, is a haven for flounder fishing. While locations like Wachapreague, Quinby, Chincoteague, and Machipongo on the Virginia ocean-side are well-known to the flounder angling community, don't overlook the better-known inlets further north, such as Ocean City and Indian River. These spots offer excellent spring fishing opportunities. Timing and TechniquesFlounder, also known as fluke in many parts of the Mid-Atlantic, migrate from the ocean depths to estuaries in the spring. Your success as an angler depends on water temperature and clarity. Once the water temperature reaches around 50 degrees, flounder become active and ready to bite. The best time to fish is often during the last two hours of incoming tide and the beginning of the ebb tide. Don't underestimate the end of the ebb tide, especially early in the season, when warm water flows over the flats and channel edges. Flounder can often be found in shallower waters during these conditions. Bait and TechniquesDrift fishing on a moving tide is a popular method for targeting flounder. A common bait setup is a double bottom rig with a minnow/squid combination, with the top hook just off the bottom and the lower hook trailing behind the sinker. Squid strips cut into a "V" shape add enticing movement. Another effective option is a bucktail or double-bucktail rig with a minnow, squid strip, or flounder belly. Flounder are not picky eaters, but certain bait preferences may vary. Artificial baits, such as Berkley Jerk Shad or manufactured soft baits, can also be successful. Experiment with different baits and colors to see what works best for you! Drift, Troll, and Back-TrollWhen the current and wind cooperate, drift fishing can be terrific. However, there are times when alternative techniques like trolling and back-trolling are more productive. Trolling and back-trolling allow you to cover more ground and concentrate on prime fishing areas. Keep your speed around one knot and use just enough weight to feel the bottom. When trolling, pay attention to any turns or bites, as flounder often grab the bait and hold on before swallowing. Drop back the rod tip immediately on the bite to increase your hook-up percentage. You can use the top/bottom rig or the double-bucktail rig fortrolling, just make sure they are bouncing on the bottom. Another option is to use a three-way swivel with a 12" sinker and a five-foot leader. Enhance your bait presentation by attaching your favorite bucktail, skirt, or spinner blade to the setup. Choose Your Adventure! So, why not spring into action and join the flounder fishing fun on the eastern shore? While there may not be as many boats or anglers as those chasing stripers in the Chesapeake, you'll find plenty of friendly smiles and an unforgettable experience. Catching Rockfish in Ocean CityIntroduction to Striped BassRockfish, striper, striped bass - no matter what you call them, these elusive fish can be found in abundance in the waters of Ocean City, Maryland. At Get Sum Charters, we specialize in hunting down these prized fish for our clients. Striped bass, locally known as rockfish, can be pursued almost year-round, with the late fall and winter months being particularly fruitful during their migration. Popular Striped Bass ChartersOn the eastern shore of Maryland, striped bass charters are popular throughout the year. However, our fall trips are especially sought after aboard the Get Sum. Embarking on early morning excursions on the Ivy Sea, we target the striped bass near the 50 bridge and the inlet rocks. Our skilled Captain Nick stays on top of the latest techniques and knows all the prime locations. Whether it's casting or using live bait, we have the expertise to maximize your chances of hooking a trophy-sized rockfish. The Premier Sport and Commercial SpeciesRockfish, or striped bass, hold a special place in the hearts of anglers and seafood lovers alike. Considered the premier sport and commercial species in the Chesapeake Bay, these silver-flanked, iridescent-striped beauties present a thrilling challenge to catch and a delightful treat to savor. In fact, the current Maryland record for a rockfish caught in the Chesapeake Bay stands at an impressive 67 pounds, 8 ounces, achieved in 1995. Due to declining stocks attributed to overfishing and pollution, Maryland implemented a moratorium on harvesting rockfish between 1985 and 1989. While the population has rebounded, stringent regulations are now in place to ensure the species' continued survival in Maryland waters. It's worth noting that the rockfish, scientifically known as Morone saxatilis, was officially designated as the state fish of Maryland in 1965. Characteristics of Striped BassRenowned for their size and fighting ability, striped bass are easily recognized by their olive green back, which gradually fades to a light silver shade on their sides, culminating in a white underside. Seven or eight dark, continuous stripes run vertically from head to tail, creating a striking visual pattern.
